The Tasting Trail is a self-drive food and drink trail crafted to guide you and your taste buds through an exploration of the finest produce that Tasmania’s North West region has to offer.

April presents the ideal opportunity to explore the Tasting Trail, where more than 20 producers will take part in our thrilling event – TrailGraze. Prepare for exclusive behind-the-scenes encounters paired with entertainment and, naturally, exceptional produce. Enjoy guided tours, interactive workshops, live musical performances, intimate sessions with the creators, and, naturally, indulgent tastings; because no culinary affair is truly complete without them.

Around Ulverstone

  • Take a drive to Tasmanian Pickled Onions 15-minute drive south of Ulverstone. See onion production first-hand from the purpose-built café and shop, Windows on Westella. Serving magnificent breakfasts and generous lunch options, the café is fully licensed and offers tastings of their own Broad Acres Vineyard wines. 

  • Just ten minutes from Penguin, Mount Gnomon Farm rests against the Dial Range. Savour a cider crafted from the heritage apple orchard, and relish in delectable offerings straight from the garden and farm. From Wednesday to Friday, curate your own platter or picnic featuring homemade free-range charcuterie, pickled garden vegetables, and local cheese. On weekends, indulge in a complete lunch service.

  • Taste Penguin Beer Co.’s locally brewed beers, and dine in from lunch until dinner six days a week. The tap house features a deck overlooking the beautiful beach, from which you can relax and experience a tasting paddle of signature brews. Weekly entertainment, live music and events are also features of the Penguin Beer Co. experience. 

  • Complete the loop back to Ulverstone for a night at Island State Brewing - The Pier, a European Bier Hall in Ulverstone. Enjoy a huge variety of freshly brewed beers whilst taking in the view of the Dial Ranges, where the Leven River meets Bass Strait.

On the way to Stanley

  • Continue east to Burnie’s Communion Brewery for a late lunch (or second lunch – it’s TrailGraze, after all) alongside complimentary tastings of fresh hop ale and f-price beer paddles.

  • Keep driving to find happy hour at Hellyers Road Distillery, where even the designated driver can indulge responsibly with a range of low-alcohol cocktails developed especially for the TrailGraze touring experience.

On the way to Launceston

Here are three must-visit locations between Launceston and Ulverstone.

  • Turners Beach Berry Patch

    Turners Beach Berry Patch café specialises in real fruit ice creams, wood-fired pizza and quality Tasmanian ingredients.

  • A short 15 minutes down the road to Devonport will have you at Southern Wild Distillery. The Distillery bases its three Dasher + Fisher gins on the landscape and ingredients that are found in the local area. Drop in to experience the tasting room, and visit the bar for a cocktail using a range of spirits and liqueurs made on-site.

  • Ashgrove Cheese

    Tasmania’s most indulgent cheese experience and must-see visitor centre. Conveniently located on the tourist route between Launceston and Ulverstone, the Ashgrove Dairy Door has something for every cheese-lover.
